Signs It's Time To Purchase New Motorcycle Tires

When it comes time to jump on your motorcycle and hit the open road, chances are high that safety is one of your biggest concerns. This is why you should always wear a helmet, obey the traffic laws, and make sure your bike is running at peak performance. Properly caring for your tires is also important, including knowing when it is time to purchase a new set.

Here are a few signs that it is time to grab a new set of motorcycle tires.

Check the Tread Depth

According to Consumer Reports, a tire's tread depth is considered illegal in some states if, when you put a penny in the groove with Abraham Lincon's head pointing down, you can see the top of Abraham Lincoln's head (about 2/32 of an inch). Most tires start at a tread measurement of around 10/32 of an inch deep. It is more difficult to measure tire tread depth without the proper tools. This is why many tire manufacturers will create a mark on the tire, such as line or an arrow, to indicate that the tire tread is too shallow and should be replaced.

It is dangerous to ride your motorcycle when the tire tread is severely worn. If your tires do not feature the indicator line or you aren't sure if the tread depth is street legal or safe, contact a professional for assistance. A mechanic can help you measure your tires' tread and determine if it is time to purchase a new set.

Look for Cracks, Bulges, and Holes

If you're spending a lot of time on the roads, particularly during the summer, your tires' rubber can begin to weaken. This will lead to cracks, bulges, and bumps. Continuing to ride on tires that are bulging can lead to a motorcycle rider's worst nightmare: a blowout. If you notice any bulges, bumps, or severe cracks on your tires, do not ride your motorcycle again until you have the tires replaced.

Consider the Tires' Age

Finally, if you recently purchased a used motorcycle or simply cannot remember when you purchased your last set of tires, it might be time to have the set replaced. Motorcycle tires are rated to last a certain amount of years, such as five years or 10 years. However, there are several factors that can influence how long your tires are viable, such as the conditions under which they are stored or how much time you spend on your cycle.

From too much tire tread wear to noticeable bulges, cracks, or holes, there are several signs that indicate you need to purchase new motorcycle tires.
